'One Battle After Another' conquers weekend box office with $22.4M debut

Universal's "Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie" debuted in second place with $13.7 million in the U.S. and Canada, contributing to a total global weekend gross of $19.2 million.
Sony's "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle" maintained strong performance in its third weekend, earning $7.1 million and bringing its domestic total to $118.2 million.
Other notable performances included Warner Bros.' "The Conjuring: Last Rites," which grossed $6.9 million, and Lionsgate's "The Strangers: Chapter 2," which debuted at $5.9 million, rounding out the top five films of the weekend.
Weekend Box Office Report: Strong Performances and Notable Openings
Warner Bros. (NASDAQ:WBD) had a successful weekend at the box office, with Paul Thomas Anderson’s film, "One Battle After Another," taking the lead in the domestic market. The film grossed an impressive $22.4 million from 3,634 theaters, which translates to an average of $6,164 per theater, according to estimates from Comscore.
The movie also made a significant impact internationally, bringing in $26.1 million and marking a global debut total of $48.5 million. Featuring a star-studded cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Benicio Del Toro, this action-drama stands out as Anderson’s largest opening in recent years.
In the second position, Universal’s family-oriented film, "Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie," opened to $13.7 million in the U.S. and Canada, along with an additional $5.5 million from international markets that contributed to a total global weekend gross of $19.2 million.
Sony and Crunchyroll’s animated sensation, "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle," secured the third spot, earning $7.1 million during its third weekend. Its domestic total now stands at an impressive $118.2 million overall.
Horror flick "The Conjuring: Last Rites," also from Warner Bros. (NASDAQ:WBD), continues to captivate audiences, landing in fourth place with $6.9 million. This brings its domestic earnings to a stellar $161.5 million. Lionsgate (NYSE:LION) completed the top five with "The Strangers: Chapter 2," which debuted at $5.9 million.
In the realm of specialty films, "They Call Him OG," produced by Prathyangira Cinemas, secured the ninth position with a modest $1.4 million. Sony’s romantic comedy "A Big Bold Beautiful Journey" rounded out the top ten, grossing $1.25 million.
IMAX (NYSE:IMAX) reported a robust performance this weekend as well, primarily supported by "One Battle After Another," which earned $7.5 million globally on its premium large format screens, with $4.6 million coming from North America.
